Work on Liverpool’s new training complex begins

Jurgen Klopp was on hand to mark the occasion as work on Liverpool’s new state-of-the-art training facility got underway in Kirkby.

Klopp joined Academy director Alex Inglethorpe and club COO Andy Hughes for the ceremony on Thursday morning.

Speaking at the site, the manager described the developments as a necessary ‘step into the future’.

“It’s really a big statement from the club and the owners that we do that today, and I’m really happy that we’ve started, because it’s not normal, I would say, that we are in a situation where it’s all quite OK.

“Melwood is a wonderful place, we love it. Kirkby is a wonderful place, we love it. But bringing them together is a step into the future, which we all need.”

Liverpool want to create a site which can house both the first team and junior players in order to ease the transition to the senior set-up.

The extensive training complex will include two gyms, a sports hall, a swimming pool, specialist suites for rehabilitation, TV studios and press conference facilities alongside the training pitches, which will themselves be of a higher standard than those at Melwood.

Other upgrades centre on the changing rooms, security and accessibility.

The club are hopeful that the pitches will be ready for use in less than 12 months’ time and that the facility will be completed in time for the first team to move there ahead of the 2020/21 season.
