Danny Murphy: Dele Alli was right to choose Spurs over Liverpool

Danny Murphy believes Dele Alli was right to choose Tottenham Hotspur over Liverpool, according to the Mirror.

Alli was linked to both Liverpool and Spurs as a teenager with MK Dons before opting for a move to White Hart Lane in 2015 for £5million.

Since then, the 22-year-old attacking midfielder has gone from strength to strength, and Murphy thinks he chose the right career path three years ago, despite the latest football results not always going Tottenham’s way.

“I like Dele Alli, he’s top drawer,” said Murphy.

“Let’s give Spurs some credit here, they’ve given him a platform every week to progress as a young lad coming out of the lower leagues.

“If he had gone to Liverpool, which he nearly did, I’m not sure he would have played as many games.

“Yeah (credit Pochettino) working with him on the training pitch, the club in terms of going we’re gonna go get him, get him, get a manager who is going to invest in the youngsters and obviously work with him on the training pitch, spot on.

“But Tottenham as a club deserve credit as well, I think he said since he signed the contract hasn’t he, he’s grateful for the platform and the supporters.

“I don’t think there’s another big club in the top-six where he would have played as much as he has.”

However, Raheem Sterling joined Liverpool from Queen’s Park Rangers in 2010 and made 129 appearances for the Reds before switching to Manchester City in 2015.

Similarly, Joe Gomez and Trent Alexander-Arnold have both become regular starters under Jurgen Klopp, so Murphy’s logic may be somewhat flawed in this instance.
