Klopp: Salah Probably More Annoyed With Reporters Than Not Scoring

The Liverpool boss calls B.S. on the idea that something is wrong with Mohamed Salah.

Last night, Mohamed Salah made Liverpool history, becoming the fastest player ever to notch 50 goals for the club, achieving the feat in a mere 65 matches. Faster than Torres. Faster than Rush. Faster than Hunt. In fact, you have to go all the way back to 1947, when Albert Stubbins reached 50 goals in 77 appearances to find the next closest contender.

It’s an incredible achievement at a club with more than a wee bit of history. So what was The Narrative™ last night? That Mo Salah is unhappy, of course. Jurgen Klopp, for one, was having none of it.

“He is completely fine,” Kloppo remarked post-match. “Really. If he is not celebrating, I don’t know if he is maybe a bit annoyed about getting asked about [not scoring].

”We didn’t speak about it, to be honest. You ask him all the time and then I go to him and say, ‘How do you feel because you haven’t scored as often?’ – I am not crazy! It is all good.

“I saw him celebrating but I couldn’t see his face from that distance. I know he is fine – and I saw his face when I took him off. That was different.”

Although Salah was less-enthusiastic than usual after scoring both goals, he was visibly annoyed about getting the hook after 73 minutes while on a hat trick. Understandable, considering Red Star were clearly there for the taking.

Fans and commentators are right to worry a bit for Mo’s mental well-being after a tumultuous summer, including the controversy with the Egyptian FA.

Still, three goals in two matches, including a well-taken penalty, should do his confidence a world of good. Plus, you know, that whole writing his name into the record books. Next up, 100 goals.
