Liverpool vs Manchester City: Facts & Stats

Sunday’s Premier League clash marks the 211th match between the two clubs as Liverpool play host to Manchester’s blue team.

For the neutral football supporter, a Super Sunday lies ahead this weekend, when Manchester City visit Anfield to take on Liverpool in the 43rd Premier League match between the two clubs.

However, for the collective Liverpool support base a win is of utmost importance to cement ourselves as true challengers for the Premier League title this season. City and Liverpool are currently tied in first place on 19 points (both teams have won 6 and drawn 1) with City edging the lead on a superior goal difference, having scored six more goals.

Sunday’s Premier League headliner also marks the 16th meeting between Jürgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola. Klopp is currently in the lead, having won eight matches (3 wins with Borussia Dortmund; 5 wins with Liverpool) while Guardiola has won five matches (4 wins with Bayern Munich; 1 win with Manchester City) and there have been three draws between them; with two in the Bundesliga and the 1 – 1 PL match draw at the Etihad in March 2017.

Liverpool’s Form

Games: 10 Wins: 7 Draws: 1 Losses: 2

Liverpool remain unbeaten in the PL with six consecutive wins and last weekend’s away draw at Stamford Bridge. However, their unbeaten run in all competitions came to a halt at home on 26 September 2018, courtesy of Eden Hazard and Chelsea in the Carabao Cup. The Reds then followed that up with the aforementioned draw and a subsequent, disappointingly dull 1 – 0 loss to Napoli in their UEFA Champions League group stage match 2 of 6, this past Wednesday.

Liverpool vs Manchester City: Head to Head

All time Wins: 104 Losses: 54 Draws: 52
Premier League Wins: 19 Losses: 8 Draws: 15
Last five meetings - Wins: 3 Losses: 1 Draws: 2

Liverpool played against Manchester City for the first time when City were still called Ardwick; and both clubs were in League Division Two – on 16 September 1893. Both sides have only conceded three goals each in the Premier League thus far this season and both have a Brazilian between the goalposts, with each side keeper the transfer record at the time they signed their goalkeepers; City paid 35 million GBP for Ederson Moraes last July whilst Liverpool spent 65 million GBP on Brazil’s current number one, Alisson Becker.

Manchester City’s Form

Games: 10 Wins: 8 Draws: 1 Losses: 1

The defending champions are currently ahead of Liverpool on goal difference in the Premier League while their in-game form only looks a slight better than the Reds. City walked away with an expected win (3 goals to 0) against their Carabao Cup opposition, Football League One’s Oxford United. They did, however, manage to taste defeat before Liverpool did this season, after losing 1 – 2 at the Etihad in their first UCL group stage match against the fifth placed Ligue 1 side, Olympique Lyonnais on 19 September 2018. City also surprised the majority of the football fandom when they drew 1 – 1 away to Wolves in their Premier League fixture on 25 August 2018.

Interesting Stats

Liverpool remain unbeaten at home in the Premier League and have not conceded a goal at home in the PL in their last nine games.
Sergio Aguero is two goals away from 150 Premier League goals but after playing nine matches there, he has yet to score one at Anfield.

Given that Liverpool have the slight edge on City with their defensive record as well as the better goalkeeper (according to the Brazilian national team), I am going to go with a very tight but exciting 3 – 2 win to Liverpool.

Up the Mighty Reds!
