Virgil van Dijk proud to have captained Liverpool in Champions League

Virgil van Dijk has spoken of his pride at captaining the Reds in their 4-0 victory over Red Star Belgrade on Wednesday at Anfield.

James Milner and Jordan Henderson didn’t feature in Liverpool’s game, with Henderson sat out through injury and Milner an unused substitute.

Speaking to liverpoolfc.com, van Dijk said: “Great win last night, scored some good goals and always nice to keep a clean sheet,” he tweeted. “Proud moment to be leading the boys out as well!”

“They were fantastic,” he told Liverpoolfc.com

“Both of them were full of energy and recovered a lot of balls. They were very important in the game and I’m very happy for them.

“The players who came in did brilliantly. It’s definitely a strength of our team.

“It’s a long season and we will need everyone.”

Van Dijk added: “It should have been a couple more I think. I always make those jokes with him!

“He’s been doing very well for us and hopefully he can continue it and keep scoring for us.”
