Xherdan Shaqiri: ‘I am enjoying the football here’

Xherdan Shaqiri is known for his outstanding goals but last night he was revered for his distribution in a Liverpool shirt.

The Swiss international sent Andy Roberston on his way to create the opener for Roberto Firmino and then he played a superb ball to Mohammed Salah for the Reds second of the match.

“I just want to say thank-you (to Klopp) for that,” Shaqiri told the Liverpool Echo.

“It is a game where I am trying my best to give him good performances.

“I think I have the quality and vision to give good passes and you can see that I wanted to give another good performance.

“I am enjoying the football here and you can see that on the pitch. The most important thing is to win as a team and it was brilliant from everyone.

“I need to try to keep going. It is a long season and we want to be successful.”

Having worked on the defensive side of the game during the week with Klopp, it paid dividends as Shaqiri won back possession which led to Liverpool’s opening goal.

“I think the coach wanted that,” Shaqiri told James Pearce.

“He wants us to counter-press and of course from that we scored the first goal. He is going to be really proud we scored like that.

“Sometimes it is not simple because the manager changes a few things, but you have to do your best.

“You can see on the pitch we have a lot of good players and a lot of creativity. I am proud to have started in the Champions League.”
