Liverpool Women Drop Match to Arsenal

Liverpool suffered a tough day in their visit to the Emirates.
To say Liverpool’s season in the Barclays Women’s Super League has been a difficult one would be an understatement. Having suffered through an up-and-down season that included a spate of injuries that put a dent in the club’s aspirations at challenging for a Champions League berth, the team then had to deal with the sacking of manager Matt Beard approximately a month ago.
The team, then, has had to find a way to carry on over the last few weeks and interim manager Amber Whitley deserves a lot of credit as the results have been generally positive, including advancing to the semi-finals of the Women’s FA Cup. A sparkling achievement in the midst of a tumultuous time.
The match that gained Liverpool entry to the semi-final was against Arsenal, whom the Reds were set to pay a visit earlier. And, as it turns out, where the Gunners were lying in wait to exact revenge for that dramatic exit out of the FA Cup. By the time of the final whistle, the Reds found themselves on the wrong end of a 4-nil match.
Arsenal are sitting in second place on the table, with Liverpool a distant 6th at 18 points back of the Gunners. So, it’s not necessarily surprising or revealing that Liverpool might have struggled in an away match to a club of this quality. It is, however, a touch disappointing given the seeming boost that the club has seen in the last few weeks.
Still, there’s a lot to play for. Liverpool next turn their attention towards a tilt against Aston Villa next Sunday, and then have a brief break before facing Chelsea - who are currently top of the WSL table - in the semi-final. A tough draw for the Reds, but one that will likely fill the squad with confidence should they manage to make the final. All eyes on the horizon, then.
