Wijnaldum: I Want To Be Part Of Something Special With Liverpool

Funny, we want that too, Gini!

For a club with such a rich history of domestic and continental dominance, Liverpool has struggled mightily in recent years. Granted, the Reds have come close to glory on numerous occasions, none more glaring a missed opportunity than last year’s Champions League final.

Regardless, Dutch international Georginio Wijnaldum wants to make amends for recent heartbreaks.

“I hope to stay here for a long time and help to make the history of this club even bigger,” Gini told the Professional Footballers Association in an interview. “We’ve qualified for the Champions League two seasons in a row and reached a major final but we want more.

“Everyone talks about winning something and we have to make sure we take that next step. I hope we can do it. We have the confidence that we can do it.

“You want to be able to look back and feel you were part of Liverpool’s great history – win something here and they will always remember you.

“I want to be remembered as a Liverpool player who was part of something special.”

After a misstep last time out in the Champions League, falling 1-0 after a late tally from the hosts, Napoli, Gini & Co. have a chance to take a big step in the right direction tonight.

Wijnaldum, in particular, has quietly gone under the radar since joining Klopp in his first full season to become one of the most versatile and important midfield players for the Reds. He has scored some big goals, including the decisive away goal in Roma to book a ticket to the Champions League final.

Hopefully Gini, and the rest of the Reds, can play their way into some attacking form tonight against Red Star, the same way they did in the same fixture last year against Maribor. I think I speak for Reds everywhere in saying we could do with a 7-0 win.
