Allan Souza Returns to Melwood After an Injury Setback

The ongoing attempt to earn an England work permit for the Brazilian has yet another hurdle.

Allan Rodrigues de Souza must have known the road was a long and winding one to Liverpool’s first team when he signed. He probably didn’t know just how long, just how winding, or just how many legal (and other) hurdles stood in his way.

He joined Liverpool at 18, but hasn’t made a single appearance for the club. He cannot get a work permit in England under the current law. In order to qualify and build his credentials, he’s been shipped out to loan spells with Finnish club SJK Seinajoki, Beligian second-tier club Sint-Truiden, Cypriot club Apollon Limassol, and two Bundesliga sides, Hertha Berlin, and finally Eintracht Frankfurt this year.

At Frankfurt, he’s only been able to make 4 appearances so far, and only two starts, totalling 175 minutes of action. And now the loan spell has gone from bad to worse, injuring his lateral collateral ligament in training last week. Souza is now expected to miss six weeks, and has returned to Melwood to recover with the Liverpool staff.

Hopefully he can fully recover for the second half of the Bundesliga season, and somehow manage to get out from under these restrictive English laws that are holding his career back.
