Dejan Lovren names three best defenders in the world
Dejan Lovren has clarified his claim to be one of the ‘best defenders in the world’ and still believes he deserves more respect for his achievements in the game.
Much was made of the Croatian’s claim to be among the defensive elite in world football after the World Cup semi-finals in the summer.
In a recent interview with Copa90, however, the centre-back attempted to clear up any confusion or animosity surrounding his claim.

“I said ‘one of’ the best defenders in the world and I think I didn’t say anything wrong,” Lovren said.
He was then asked to name other defenders on the same level as him.
“Virgil (van Dijk), I would say,” he replied.
“We had a great season, last season, me and him. We reached the final of the Champions League.
“I would say (Raphael) Varane. I like Varane, he deserves a lot of credit but I think he doesn’t get it as much as (Sergio) Ramos gets it and I don’t agree with that.
“Is Varane better than Ramos? Definitely. I think in this moment and in previous years. He won the Champions League he won the World Cup. So he should be voted the best defender in the world. I think they chose Ramos (at the FIFA Best awards) but that’s a decision that you cannot change.
“Then I would always consider Thiago Silva. He’s really good, experienced, he’s not so tall but he jumps quite high.”
Lovren reached the Champions League final and World Cup final during the course of 2018, and though he failed to win either competition, his defensive stability has improved markedly since the arrival of van Dijk at Liverpool.
