Gary Neville: Dejan Lovren is a top centre half

Gary Neville has praised Dejan Lovren in spite of his recent outburst involving Sergio Ramos, saying the Croatian is a passionate person and is a ‘top centre-half.’

Liverpool have made a fantastic start to the season, sitting second in the Premier League table and the partnership between Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez has been a massive contributing factor to the early season success of this side.

Some on social media have suggested the minimal game time that Dejan Lovren has also been a contributing factor, with the Croatian a loyal and dedicated yet flawed player that has cost the Reds in the past.

Gary Neville, somewhat surprisingly, has praised Lovren for his passion shown while wearing the Red of Croatia while also suggesting he could do with fewer public outbursts like the one earlier this week.

Speaking about the defender on Sky Sports, Neville said: “He was a little bit gobby in the World Cup, wasn’t he?

“I have to say that for me with Lovren, when he was at Southampton I absolutely loved him. And when Liverpool signed him it didn’t surprise me at all.

“I think it took him time to settle in. I think now he actually seems to be getting better again. He’s passionate about playing for his country.

I did think that he and [Domagoj] Vida at the World Cup would struggle, I thought he would give them more problems.

“But they did quite well in the game in the end. He’s confident in himself, he’s got a lot of belief. To be fair, when he’s at his best he’s a top centre-half.”
