Good Neighbours: Liverpool FC and Red Neighbours Host Event for Community Elderly

The Red Neighbours program hosted an event at Anfield as part of their initiative to address social isolation among the elderly.

Yesterday was American Thanksgiving. And while the holiday is indeed fraught with the weight of racism, genocide, and imperialism - like any good American institution! - it is at least a moment when some among us take the time to be grateful. It is a time for family gatherings and shared meals. It is a time for gratitude.

But for far too many, the season is a reminder of loneliness and isolation. As we have written here before, one of the initiatives of the Red Neighbours program is to tackle social isolation among the elderly. A thing many of us take for granted, being able to meet up with friends or family often can be a bit of an ask for the elderly due to myriad factors including health reasons and accessibility to close relations. And given that the club’s motto is You’ll Never Walk Alone, its an incredibly fitting and appropriate cause to take up.

In that way, Red Neighbours hosted their monthly Monday Club at Anfield where locals 55 and older in Liverpool can come together and join in a spot of tea, socialize, and take in a game of Bingo. This month’s gathering featured a collection for a children’s charity that would deliver all collected items to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital for any patients having to remain in the hospital during the holiday.

It is a beautiful way to both gather the community together and address social isolation by providing this standing appointment for them to look forward to, but then also to help them remain connected to their community by getting them involved in a charity drive. Here’s hoping that as we enter the festive season, we might all seek to find ways to sew peace, justice, and love in our own neighborhoods. That we might seek to be good neighbors.
