Hey, Remember Lazar Markovic?
The Liverpool spare part has been injured for the past month.
Lazar Markovic is only 24-years-old. You’d be forgiven for thinking that he’d actually been on the Liverpool books for the last 24 years, because that’s what it feels like at this point. Every transfer window is supposed to be the one where Markovic finally finds his forever home, but so far it hasn’t worked out that way.
Liverpool are eager to offload the player who Klopp sees as surplus to requirements. Last summer they came close, but the Serbian turned down a chance to join Anderlecht on a permanent deal. And so he’s been banished to the Academy since pre-season ended, with an eye towards getting him out in January.
Markovic has featured for the Under-23s this season, but not recently. Now the Liverpool ECHO is reporting that what many thought was Markovic getting frozen out of the Academy team or Liverpool paying out the remaining time on his contract was actually the player recovering from an injury. He’s been on the sideline for a month due to a calf problem.
Markovic’s current situation is untenable. Liverpool can’t be expecting a return on the £20million investment they made in him, but getting him off their books would be a good enough reward in itself. Meanwhile, Markovic has been wasting his peak years in exile.
If he wants to resuscitate his career, he needs to find a new option elsewhere. His Liverpool career was over before Klopp even arrived at Anfield. With his contract ending this summer, this is the last chance he and the club have to salvage something from this ill-fitting match.
