Official: Henderson Signs New Longterm Contract

The Captain will remain at the helm.

Headed into this season, the club had a few contract priorities it needed to sort. Today, we can check one of those names off of the list as Liverpool have announced that Jordan Henderson has put pen to paper on a new longterm contract. With the terms being reported as a new 5 year contract, this should ensure that Liverpool’s Captain will be patrolling the central of the park at Anfield through his prime years, and would timeout in the midfielder’s 33rd year. Great news for the club.

This is also quite the achievement for Henderson, who arrived in the aftermath of the Hodgepodge, as part of King Kenny’s summer transfer haul in 2011. Criticized at the time as being a bit of an overvalued youth signing - including a rather infamous critique of his running style from a legendary manager - Jordan Henderson has been nothing short of spectacular in his time at Anfield. Ably marshaling the midfield in various roles with his patented one-touch, metronomic passing and unparalleled work rate, he has absolutely flourished as the anchor in Jurgen Klopp’s midfield three.

Concerns arose last year as it seemed that the Captain’s rather healthy run of games appeared to be threatened as he fought off various injuries that moved him in and out of the lineup. But with competent work in successive transfer windows, the team have been able to build a stable of able controllers to step in and provide Hendo with needed rest.

As such, headed into the wind down of last season, Henderson was providing some vintage performances as the midfield general, looking as invaluable as ever. Fresh legs along with his trademark energy, Reds fans have welcomed a seemingly fully healed and refreshed captain with enthusiasm.

Henderson, for his part, is equally excited about the opportunity to continue to ply his trade in front of the Kop:

“There is no other place in the world I would rather play football. I want to be here for as long as I can be.”

Top words from a top man and we can only hope for more of the same from our Captain.
