Jordan Henderson: Champions League progression “still in our hands”

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson was left disappointed after last night’s defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, but brushed off suggestions that Marco Verratti should have been sent off in the first half.

Juan Bernat and Neymar put two past Alisson despite the Brazilian’s best efforts to keep them out before a James Milner penalty on the stroke of half time restored some hope for the Reds.

But despite a better second-half display, Jurgen Klopp’s side were unable to change the result, which leaves them needing to beat Napoli on the final matchday at Anfield.

“We’re disappointed,” said Henderson, quoted by the Mirror. “We feel we’re good enough to come here and win. It wasn’t our night in the end but we tried to keep pushing for the equaliser.

“We kept going and kept fighting and now we just need to keep our hopes up with a win at Anfield.

“We just need to get through that game against Napoli now. It’s still in our hands, I suppose.”

PSG midfielder Marco Verratti put in a dangerous-looking challenge on defender Joe Gomez in the first half, a tackle for which many referees would have red-carded him immediately. Henderson, however, preferred to focus on the next game rather than the challenge, the severity of which was missed by the referee.

“It looked quite high but I’m not really sure,” he said. “In the moment it is fast and that is football. I’m sure we made a few as well.

“We now have another big game at Anfield and we can get through that and into the next round.”
