Jurgen Klopp explains what Sadio Mane contract extension means for LFC

On Thursday evening, Liverpool announced that Sadio Mane had signed a new contract extension, keeping him at the club until 2023 and Jurgen Klopp argues that it’s a sign of how far the Reds have come in recent years.

For the last few months, Liverpool supporters have been concerned about Sadio Mane’s contract situation as until last night, it looked as though he might have been allowing his deal with the Reds to slowly tick down as Emre Can did.

With the Senegal international now tied down until 2023 just as Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino are, Liverpool find themselves in a hugely powerful position as most of their top talents are committed to long term contracts that will see them playing at Anfield during their prime years.

And Jurgen Klopp says Mane’s contract is a sign that Liverpool are one again an attractive destination for the best players to be playing their football at crucial moments in their careers.

“I’m really pleased [Mane] signed the contract,” said the Reds boss. “It’s a big signing, a player in a big moment in his career.

“To extend the contract is more than the signing, it’s a statement and I’m happy about that. It really shows a bit of the change the club did in the last few years.

“A few years ago it constantly happened, where players in a good moment thought they had to leave to make the next step. Now our boys think they can make the next step here.”

On top of that, Klopp said that he is really pleased to be able to reward a player that has given his all since signing for the German in 2016 for £36million.

Sadio Mane of Liverpool (L) laughs with Andreas Kornmayer, Head of Fitness and Conditioning during a Liverpool training session at Melwood Training Ground on September 17, 2018 in Liverpool, England.

“That’s a part of the business, you sign a player and you hope it will work out, then after one year people come up because of interest from other clubs,” he added.

“This club shows always that we realise the value of players with new contracts.

“We are comfortable with the squad, but it’s now important that we use that quality. Signing a new contract is only five seconds. It’s only one thing, and now we have to carry on. I’ve never shown any doubt about the quality of the squad.

“It’s good that it’s settled and nobody needs to come and ask for these players at least. That’s it.”
