Robertson Backs Liverpool to Recover After Champions League Defeat

The Liverpool left back is confident his team can rediscover their “spark.”

Tuesday’s loss to Red Star Belgrade has been lingering in my mind. Liverpool were ugly. From the whistle, they played in that awful way that sinks your spirit. Red Star were good, they were fine. It was always going to be a competitive match but golly were Liverpool so unfortunately bad that the game was nearly handed to the Serbian champions.

It’s been a hard go for Jürgen Klopp’s team this season. The Reds have been racking up points in the Premier League but the attacking band of players have struggled for maximum form along the way. Liverpool’s defense has been in stellar form thanks to incredible starts by Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez. But the midfield has also run hot and cold, no thanks to injuries to Jordan Henderson and Naby Keita.

Collectively, the team hasn’t reached the intensity in attack and the consistency of form from last season. Liverpool have had to grind out more results of late. Signs of a team rounding into form were starting to show domestically and if Liverpool want to shake off this Champions League loss the players need to focus, as Andy Robertson noted, on rediscovering their “spark.”

“I think it’s one of those periods we need to get through,” said Robertson.

“Fair play to Red Star, they battled hard, defended for their lives second half and we just couldn’t quite break them down.

“Away to Napoli, we were poor, very poor. We tried to hang on and deserved what we got, even though it was so late on. Against Red Star it was the exact same.

“We had chances to go in front. Studge (Daniel Sturridge) had a good chance and if that went in it could have been a good night, but we’re sitting here talking about a defeat unfortunately.

“Last season everyone was used to us scoring four or five goals. That can’t be possible every single game. At times we’ve dug out results, in the Premier League more so this season. Maybe it’s not been as good to look at but we’ve been effective at it.

“But yeah, maybe we are missing a bit of a spark in terms of not winning 4-0 or 5-0. If the manager thinks that then we need to try and get it back.

“We need to come together as a team and try to get the spark and try to win games more comfortably.”
