Speaking at the pre-match press conference, cited by the Liverpool Echo, Tuchel said: “We’re confident but it’s a challenge because Liverpool are one of the greatest teams in Europe,” Tuchel said.

“They got to the final and are always hard to play against. We need to play with passion and confidence.

“There are still big steps for us to go. We are facing a team – stress that word ‘team’ and you end up at Liverpool.

“They really play as a team with the big influence of Jurgen with his energy. They have had three-and-a-half years together creating that mentality.

“Jurgen is an unbelievable trainer. He has lost only one key player in (Philippe) Coutinho and spent a lot of money. He does a great job to put this machine on the pitch every three days.

“Liverpool are used to being in the Champions League final, used to winning this trophy. It makes something for the club and the mentality.

“We have to make steps to grow with this kind of competition and energy in crucial moments. We have to step up quickly.

“It’s an advantage (for Liverpool) but it’s football and we’ll try to make it up with our home supporters.”

Asked about the fitness of Neymar and Mbappe, Tuchel said: “Yes, Neymar is 100% and Mbappe as well.

“They are fit. They trained today and yesterday, and they will line up tomorrow. There’s no risk.”
