Jurgen Klopp urges Liverpool to “write our own history”

Liverpool extended their unbeaten start to the Premier League season to 16 matches as they ran riot at the Vitality Stadium.

Mohamed Salah grabbed a fine hat-trick and Lewis Cook inadvertently put one in his own net to seal a result that would send the Reds top of the league.

Thanks to Chelsea’s victory over Manchester City later in the day, that’s exactly where the Reds will stay as Manchester United travel to Anfield next weekend.

With 42 points from the opening 16 games, Jurgen Klopp’s men have amounted their highest tally of points of any Liverpool side at this stage of a top-flight campaign.

The German has now urged his players to “write their own history” in what has been an astounding season so far.

He said: “I think I said a few years ago that we have to write our own history.

“It’s important but it’s not the most important thing in the world that we beat any team’s record from 30 years ago or whatever.

“The thing is that we want to be as successful as possible. Nobody knows what that means. This league is so difficult to play.

“To have 42 points, I usually had that in April, and now it’s December. That’s massive. It’s exceptional, and the boys deserve all the credit for that because they fight for each yard.”

Liverpool’s next test will be the Champions League tie with Napoli at Anfield, which the Reds must win either 1-0, or by two clear goals to qualify, assuming Paris Saint Germain are victorious over Red Star Belgrade.

Klopp added: “Today we can celebrate, go home, eat, sleep, recover immediately and then tomorrow, little session, Monday little session, then Tuesday is Napoli. That’s the life, and it’s okay. For today, all good.”
