Liverpool Counting on Anfield to “Really Make a Difference” Against Napoli
Midfielder Fabinho says that having the decisive match at Anfield is a big boost for the Reds.
One game will decide Liverpool’s Champions League future. Win, either by 1-0 or by two goals if Napoli score, puts them in the knockout rounds no matter what happens elsewhere on Tuesday. It’s a lot of pressure—for both sides.
Whoever gets the result they need, though, will have earned something of a famous result. At Anfield. Under the lights. A famous European night, for one side or the other, to decide who goes on and who drops into the Europa League.
And Liverpool midfielder Fabinho is feeling positive about the home side’s chances because the game is at home, at Anfield, and already in his short time since joining the club over the summer he’s seen what that can mean.
“I’m living it week in and week out,” he said. “The atmosphere in the stadium, the reaction of the fans to every victory—you can see how fanatical the supporters are and how much they love their team. They really make a difference.
“The first Champions League night against PSG was amazing. The fans put on a show at every home game and it gives us an extra push when we play at Anfield. We’ll be playing at Anfield, which will be an extra boost for us.”
At the end of what has, so far, been a disappointing European campaign the Reds could certainly use that boost, and despite the fact they currently sit top of the Premier League table they’ve struggled with the Champions League.
Three away losses have them needing not just a win but the right win to advance, and at least two of those losses—at Napoli and Red Star—were wholly deserved. But, despite that, they still control their fate. And Anfield will be up for it.
“We’re going to try to impose ourselves, as we do against whoever we’re up against,” Fabinho added. “And driven on by our fans, we’re going to give our everything to win this game.”
