Joe Gomez’s new Liverpool deal: Building a brighter future for Liverpool

First came new contracts for Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and then finally Sadio Mané. Now, English youngster Joe Gomez has been rewarded for his outstanding form with a new long-term deal at Liverpool.

Gomez’s new deal will see him stay on Merseyside until 2024 when his new deal expires, and will see him spend some of his best years at the Club.

Not only is this a big moment in Gomez’s career, but this contract sets down an important marker for both Liverpool, its current and future players and their opponents and rivals on the European footballing stage.

As Liverpool fans, it can be said that we forget from time to time just how young Joe Gomez is. At just 21-years-old, the former Charlton man has become a focal point of Liverpool’s success this season, forming a formidable partnership with record signing Virgil van Dijk at the heart of Klopp’s watertight defence.

He has displayed an incredible maturity and willingness to learn and adapt this season under Klopp’s guidance, and it is paying dividends for Liverpool as Gomez continues to earn plaudits from across the footballing world, with some even heralding him as one of the Premier League’s finest centre backs.

So what a joy it is to see him in a Liverpool shirt, and to make that a sight that is now due to last for another five-and-a-half-years, and it further reinforces Klopp’s ethos that he does not want Liverpool to be a selling club any more.

His ideas are sinking in now, and with his team top of the league, it looks like it’s paying dividends. Gone are the days where the likes of Mascherano, Torres, Coutinho and Alonso are sold off to the first big club to come sniffing – Liverpool is a team that players want to be a part of and that the Club is determined to keep a hold of.

Gomez’s new contract is another indication of this, as it is without doubt that other big clubs in Europe will have had Gomez on their radar due to his outstanding form this season. He really is a player for the future, and that future he sees at Anfield.

Not only does it send a message to those outside of Liverpool, but it signifies to those currently in Jürgen Klopp’s squad that their manager is intent on keeping his band of merry men together for as long as he possibly can, keeping everything running smoothly and continuing his side’s upward trajectory of recent times.

Players like Virgil van Dijk who clearly joined Liverpool for the vision that Klopp has set out, will be overjoyed by the news that someone who he rates so highly will be around to continue Liverpool’s charge towards the summit of English football. Virgil even took to social media to express his delight at the news of Gomez’s new deal.

It sends a message to the likes of van Dijk, Alisson, Fabinho and all other members of the squad, regardless of when they joined Liverpool, that the best players believe in Klopp’s vision and here to see it through until fruition.

And as for those on the outside looking in with interest, it signifies a team going places – and that’s an attractive prospect for any player in the world.

If Liverpool are continue to keep improving, players like Gomez need to be part of the furniture for a considerable time, and this will make the world’s best talent interested and eager to get in on the action at Anfield.

It’s an exciting time to be a Liverpool fan, and Gomez’s signature on the dotted line only further emphasises this point.
