Liverpool not scared of Manchester United attack, says van Dijk

Virgil van Dijk is not worried about the pace of Manchester United forwards Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford, saying that Liverpool have speed of their own at the back.

A defining characteristic of van Dijk’s defending is his incredible positioning. He is almost always in exactly the right position which means he is hardly ever exposed by pacy forwards.

There were moments in the home game against PSG where it looked like Liverpool might be stretched by the unbelievably quick Kylian Mbappe only for van Dijk’s positioning and high footballing IQ to beat the brute pace of the French world champion.

When asked by Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher in conversation with Sky Sports if the pace of Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford scares him, van Dijk replied: “You know what you’re going to face.

“We have pretty good pace as well, so we don’t need to be scared of anything. But obviously we need to be aware of their danger; they have good players, especially up front.

“We need to be ready for that. But we need to play our game and make sure we are on top of them and make sure they are put under pressure.”
