Marko Grujic Suffers Injury Setback at Hertha Berlin

The on-loan midfielder was showing great promise before his latest setback.

While Liverpool wait on the status of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joël Matip, one player on the club’s books got some confirmed bad news on the injury front as on-loan Marko Grujic was ruled out for at least a month with ligament damage.

The midfielder, currently plying his trade with Hertha Berlin in the Bundesliga, was injured during a training session, the latest setback for the 22-year-old at a time when the player really needs to be playing regularly to get his career on track.

Grujic has already missed two months this season due to a previous ankle injury, but following his return from that last month, the German club’s manager dubbed him the best midfielder Hertha had seen in at least the past 20 years.

“The diagnosis was very bitter for me,” Grujic noted. “I was just on the way to becoming fully fit again. But I’m looking forward and I want to get back to the pitch as fast as possible. It was just an unfortunate situation, not even a foul.”

Taken together—the injuries and his impact in limited time for Hertha this season—it rather sum up Grujic’s career to date, a player with a superstar’s promise who for one reason or another has struggled to quite put it all together.

The good news is that with a winter break on the horizon Grujic may not miss much actual game time, and if he can stay fit in the new year while delivering the kind of performances that had Hertha’s manager raving, his future will be bright.
