Van Dijk can become best ever Premier League defender, says Tony Cascarino

Virgil van Dijk is in a class of his own, says Tony Cascarino, after the Dutchman helped Liverpool to a win over Wolves on Friday.

Scoring the second goal to wrap up proceedings at Molineux, van Dijk grabbed his first Premier League goal since signing for the Reds in January for a record £75million fee.

What was most impressive, however, was how van Dijk dealt expertly with every defensive situation that he needed to and even outpaced the incredible Adama Traore.

Cascarino writes for the Times, “Some players make the game look easy and Virgil van Dijk is just bossing this league at the moment.

“He was winning headers, matching Adama Traoré for pace, throwing dummies in the Wolves penalty area and he took his goal like a centre forward, drifting in off the shoulder of the defenders. Liverpool haven’t had a defender as classy and composed since Alan Hansen.

“The Premier League has had some great central defenders — John Terry, Tony Adams, Rio Ferdinand — but van Dijk may turn out to be better than all of them, he’s one of the best centre backs I’ve ever seen.”
