Alisson Dreams of Champions League Glory With Liverpool

The Brazilian number one claims this is one of the main reasons he chose to join Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool over Chelsea.

If Liverpool lift a major trophy this summer, a major contributing factor will be Jurgen Klopp’s insistence on signing the best center back and best goalkeeper that money can buy.

It is not an exaggeration to say that calm and composed pairing of Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker have already won this Liverpool side a fair few points, including the dramatic last-minute save to keep the Reds in the Champions League in the waning moments of the Group Stage.

While Liverpool fans might be more focused on finally bringing home that long-lost domestic title, Alisson is still thinking about last year’s semi final and final, and how to put those defeats right.

“I chose Liverpool for the same reasons I went to Roma when I first left Brazil – I thought this would be the best move for my career,” Alisson told Four Four Two (worth the click just for the main image!) “Chelsea were changing their manager and not playing in the Champions League. I’ve also always admired Liverpool’s history.

“This is a club with five European Cups in their trophy cabinet. I really wanted to be part of that history.

“I came very close to winning the competition with Roma and I’m working hard to make it happen now with Liverpool.

“What’s life if not fighting for your dreams? I dream of winning the Champions League.”

It seems entirely possible that Alisson, fresh after watching Liverpool’s deadly attacking trio put 7 past him in two matches (a feat Premier League sides took more than half a season to best), watched Liverpool’s (temporarily, though maybe permanently brain-damaged keeper) struggle in the final and thought “I think I can be be the difference here.”

Rival fans and pundits seem content to take to Twitter and TV to insist that Jurgen Klopp is somehow underachieving at Liverpool. They look at the dearth of trophies in his 3+ years here as a stick to beat him with, instead of admiring the fact that he’s made Liverpool a consistent Champions League side, and one that has made 2 European finals in his first three years.

Players, on the other hand, clearly see that Kloppo has built something special on Merseyside, and want to be a part of it. If the title race remains tight (and it looks like it will be), the league might take priority over the Champions League. However, if the Reds make it through Bayern Munich, it’s not hard to imagine this side making yet another deep run in Europe.

If we do return to the Champions League final this year, or in the near future, we’ll all be comforted to see Alisson (hopefully in his bright pink kit) between the sticks.
