Fabinho Ready to Provide Cover at Right Back
Given he regularly plays at right back for Brazil, Fabinho isn’t fazed by the idea of filling in there for Liverpool.
With James Milner missing through suspension while Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez remain on the injured list, JĂĽrgen Klopp faces something of a conundrum at right back as Liverpool prepare to take on Leicester City this evening.
Fabinho, though, says he’s ready to step in—at least if youth right back Rafa Camacho isn’t handed his first league start—and the Brazilian international insists that whether it’s at right back, centre half, or in midfield he’s comfortable playing there.
“We’ve got injured players in that position and Millie unavailable, [but] we’ve got other options there with myself and Rafa Camacho,” Fabinho noted. “We know that we can adapt if needs be and the coach knows that we can play in these positions.”
While Fabinho hasn’t played at right back for Liverpool, he played there with Monaco at times and all of his Brazil appearances over the past year have come at that position. He should, then, be more than comfortable taking it on if asked to.
And with Gomez and Alexander-Arnold both expected back in fairly short order now, there are worse things than to be forced to turn to on Brazil’s current starting right back to cover the position at the club level for a match or two.
Some fans might be worried, but Fabinho doesn’t seem to be—and Klopp isn’t, either, with the manager flatly ruling out the possibility that he might seek to bring in defensive reinforcements before the close of the January transfer window.
