Rumour Mongering: Wolves Join Origi Chase

The Midlands club are looking for more firepower up front.

Despite his backline exemplifying the potential consequences of a lack of squad depth, and with no indication that the Reds are looking to round out their roster, Jürgen Klopp appears confident that trimming his squad will have no negative impact on Liverpool’s title dreams this season.

Dominic Solanke and Nathaniel Clyne both joined Bournemouth in the past week, the former permanently, to the tune of a £19m transfer fee, the latter on a six-month loan. Dejan Lovren, Joël Matip and Joe Gomez are all currently unavailable through injury, leading to an 85 minute cameo in the FA Cup for 16-year old Ki-Jana Hoever, while the frontline are a Daniel Sturridge knock — thankfully a most rare and unlikely occurrence — away from Divock Origi being their only backup attacker.

Oh, Origi is for sale, and suitors are lining up? Well then. Better get the bubble wrap out.

While West Ham were reportedly leading the chase for the Belgian frontman on Wednesday, the Birmingham Mail are claiming today Wolverhampton have replaced the London club as a the most likely destination for Origi. The Wolves have surprised many in the first half of the season, currently sitting in 9th place, largely on the back of an unconventional yet remarkably defensively sound playing style, but have struggled to put the ball in the back of the net, and are in need of reinforcements.

Capable of playing across the front line, and with top level experience from three separate leagues, Origi could fit the bill, and with Fosun International signing the cheques, the West Midlands club are unlikely to balk at Liverpool’s £20m asking price. Given an extended run of starting minutes at the central striker position, Origi may even turn the corner and become the player he looked destined to be a few years ago. This could be one of those everybody wins-scenarios the legends speak of.

So long as the frontline stays healthy, that is.
