Salah Wins African Player of the Year Again

The Egyptian King retains his crown.

With 44 goals for club and country, a Premier League record for goals scored, and an — admittedly brief — Champions League final appearance, 2018 was always going to be Mohamed Salah’s year. Egypt may not have made it out of their group in Russia, and the Reds left Kiev without the trophy, but Salah had an astonishingly impressive year, and was the odds-on favourite to retain his African Player of the Year title.’

The oddsmakers were proven right at the Aiteo CAF Awards in Dakar on Tuesday night, as the 26-year old collected his second consecutive PotY award, ahead of Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and team-mate Sadio Mané.

Despite a slow-ish start to the season, still feeling the effects of a long summer and the dislocated shoulder he suffered in May’s Champions League final, Salah has moved through the gears as the season has gone along, and currently sits in third place in the Premier League’s scoring charts with 13. Add assists to the mix, of which the former Chelsea man has seven, and Salah reigns supreme.

Having just entered his prime, and with a smoothly-run Liverpool sitting at the top of the league table, there is every chance the Egyptian will add to his accolades in the coming years, hopefully starting with the title Premier League winner when May rolls around.
