Journalist reveals who will start alongside Joel Matip in Virgil van Dijk’s place

Dejan Lovren has been ruled out of featuring against Bayern Munich on Tuesday evening as the Croatian failed in his attempt to be fit in time to face the Bundesliga giants.

The 29-year-old travelled to Croatia for specialist treatment on his hamstring injury and despite returning to England on the weekend, Lovren will not be part of the matchday squad to face Bayern.

Dave Maddock reports for the Mirror that the former Southampton defender “has lost his battle to be fit for ­Liverpool ’s Champions League showdown with Bayern Munich on Tuesday.”

Lovren is yet to return to training since his trip to Croatia despite Jurgen Klopp saying he could be back at Melwood with his teammates on Saturday.

Virgil van Dijk won’t be in the squad to face Bayern either as the Dutchman serves a one-match suspension while Joe Gomez is still several weeks away from returning to action.

Fabinho is to be the man to start alongside Joel Matip in central defence at Anfield as part of a temporary makeshift defence.
