Klopp Talk: Injuries Created a “Tough Situation”

In the wake of their draw, Klopp talks about how injuries have hamstrung the team.

Following Liverpool’s draw away to West Ham, manager Jürgen Klopp discussed how the team’s unfortunate string of injuries in recent months has stalled their momentum somewhat.

“We had a difficult situation,” he admitted. “It’s a long season. In general, we lost one game in the whole season, so the team are doing well. We have a tough situation in the moment. I don’t know where the injuries or illnesses are coming from. Millie was ill and maybe is still ill, I’m not sure; Virg had three or four days where he was out and lost four kilos. Obviously that doesn’t help. You have difficult situations; the centre-half position, the right full-back, that’s all difficult in the moment. But the boys still fight.”

Despite that, however, Klopp refused to let injuries be the scapegoat for a disappointing night.

“It is not an excuse or nothing. I said we could have played better tonight, 100 per cent, but it’s the situation and it’s not perfect. We lost two players and Millie came back because he didn’t train yesterday. He came by himself to London because it was infectious. That is all not perfect, of course. For me, it explains parts of the game, but we don’t look for these things. As I said, the preparation for the game was far away from being perfect and we still got a point. That’s it.”

Seeing the myriad of injuries and health issues from big to small laid out like that does reinforce just what a precarious position Liverpool find themselves in. Still, they remain at the top of the table, ahead of Manchester City by three points, and they’ve only lost one game so far this season.

In the coming weeks, the team will hopefully begin to regain some injured players, including Dejan Lovren, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and even Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, which should prove both a real and psychological boost to the team.
