The four ways VAR could be in use during Liverpool vs. Bayern Munich

VAR is in use in UEFA’s knockout tournaments and Liverpool could be affected by the new technology either positively or negatively.

The purpose for the Video Assistant Referees technology is to assist officials in making decisions that are so difficult to call correctly 100% of the time with the naked eye when there is so much going on at any one time on a football pitch.

As we saw from Ajax vs. Real Madrid and on numerous occasions during the 2018 FIFA World Cup, if the team manning the technology behind the scenes isn’t on the same page, the wrong decision can be met.

A post on Liverpool’s official website states that VAR will only be used when there is a “clear and obvious” error by a referee or linesman on the pitch.

Furthermore, the only‘match-changing’ situations that can be called into question are goals, incidents in the penalty area, red cards and mistaken identity.

Hopefully, Liverpool vs. Bayern Munich can pass without controversy and that VAR can be put to good use.
