Aldridge confident Liverpool can win the title this season

Liverpool legend John Aldridge believes Manchester City will drop points before the end of the season and Liverpool will be crowned champions.

Writing in his column for the Irish Independent, Aldridge explained that his “personal experience” leads him to believe that Jurgen Klopp’s Reds can achieve greatness this season.

“I remember being in a similar position to City back in 1989, when the Liverpool team I was a part of had to cram in a succession of fixtures after we were forced to rearrange games following the Hillsborough disaster,” Aldridge wrote.

“We had to deal with the emotion of a disaster that still affects me and everyone associated with it to this day, while also trying to get our heads focused on football.

“Obviously it was not an easy task and, in the end, it caught up with us.

“We played on the Tuesday night and then the Friday in a title decider against Arsenal, just a few days after we had beaten Everton after playing extra-time in a draining FA Cup final at Wembley.

“George Graham’s Gunners needed to beat us 2-0 at Anfield to win the First Division title on goal difference and fatigue was a big factor in them pulling off their win, with a last-minute goal from Michael Thomas that still haunts me to this day.

“While City don’t have the emotional strain we had to deal with 30 years ago, they do have a fixture pile-up that will test them to the full.

“That should give Jurgen Klopp and his Liverpool players real hope that they will slip up on at least one occasion.”

Aldridge continued: “The big question hovering over all of this is: Are Liverpool good enough to take advantage if City stumble?

“I believe we can do that, however I suspect we are in for a few more twists and turns before the Premier League trophy is handed over on May 12.”

The former Reds striker finished by saying, “I believe the Premier League title race will be decided on the final day of the season – with Liverpool one or two points clear of City before kick-off.

“City will travel to Brighton on the last Sunday of the campaign and you would certainly expect them to win, while Liverpool have a home game against a Wolves side that may well have their minds on the club’s first appearance in an FA Cup final since 1960.

“If this scenario becomes a reality, Liverpool fans can expect to be celebrating wildly at 5.00pm on Sunday May 12.”
