Virgil van Dijk reveals his motivation for this season

Virgil van Dijk has revealed that he wants to become a legend at Liverpool, but is more concerned with helping his side win the title this season.

The Reds’ No.4 has been imperious in defence this season, playing a key role in the 17 clean sheets Jurgen Klopp’s side have notched throughout the campaign.

A number of pundits and players have backed the Dutchman to win the PFA Player of the Year award come the end of the season, and few would argue that Van Dijk is deserving of the accolade.

However, the towering centre-back is only interested in the Premier League crown right now.

“I want to focus on achieving something special, which this club hasn’t done for 29 years, and if either myself or any other players are involved in picking up individual awards, that’s great,” Van Dijk said, as quoted by LiverpoolFC.com.

“It would be a huge honour, but I’d be very proud if any of the squad win awards for a great season, like Mo Salah did last time.

“Winning the league makes you feel even more proud of yourself and the team. It’s a sign of the hard work you’ve put in over a whole season.

“That motivates you. Winning the Premier League title puts you in the history books forever and makes you a legend. That’s why you play football. You want to become a legend.”
