Four Liverpool Players Named To PFA Team of The Year

...and it should have been more.

The England PFA Team of the Year, voted on by all the players in the Premier League, was released this year. With two run-away sides—two sides that, regardless of what happens, will finish with more points than any two others in English top flight history—it’s no shock that most of the XI were either from Liverpool or Manchester City.

The Team of the Year is as follows:

Ederson; Alexander-Arnold, Van Dijk, Laporte, Robertson; Fernandinho, Pogba; Bernardo Silva, Mane, Sterling; Aguero.

So, that’s six City players, four Liverpool players, and one from some irrelevant sixth place team.

On one hand, it feels a little unfair to all the talented footballers in the Premier League that aren’t playing on two of the best teams of all time (and some Europa League side). But on the other, this is a pretty fair representation.

My one major quibble would be Ederson over Alisson. Alisson has two more clean sheets than his City counterpart, and has conceded two fewer goals. And he’s Brazil’s number one. And doesn’t look like he’s murdered and ate his own family.

Another major omission, of course, is the “off-year” Mohamed Salah. The Egyptian is still in for a shout for the Golden Boot, tied on league goals with Sergio Aguero and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Of course, footballers are subjected to the same media and social media narratives as the rest of us, and are unlikely or unable to watch most other matches.

Regardless, four very deserving Liverpool players made the list. It’s especially an honor for our young fullbacks, especially Andy Robertson who has come a long way since getting relegated with Hull two seasons ago.
