It’s Official: Virgil Van Dijk Named PFA Player Of The Year

After the news of the potential trophy for the defender came out earlier in the week, it’s really official now.

Sure, the news got spoiled earlier in the week but now that the ceremony is happening, it’s been made official: Virgil Van Dijk has been voted the PFA Player of the Year, succeeding Mohamed Salah in the award and becoming the 8th Liverpool player to have the honor. He’s also just the second defender in the 21st century to get the honor from his peers.

The ceremony was held in London on Sunday night and Van Dijk had the pleasure of being accompanied by his fellow Team Of The Year winners and Liverpool teammates Sadio Mane, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Andrew Robertson. Of course, Big Virg took home the most coveted prize of the evening, beating out the likes of Raheem Sterling, Sergio Aguero, Bernardo Silva, and Eden Hazard. (I know, sorry, lots of name dropping here).

“It’s unbelievable. To win this award, voted by all the players you play against week in, week out, is fantastic,” said Van Dijk after accepting the award.

“I think it’s the highest honour you can get. I’m really proud.”

Of course, all of us Liverpool fans know what an important piece of the team Virgil has been, helping Liverpool to secure 23 clean sheets in 45 appearances in all competitions, scoring 3 goals, and only allowing 20 goals conceded. He’s truly helped transform Liverpool into the threat it is today and at 27 years old, hopefully we have him to help out for a long time coming.
