Klopp Talk: Fans and Players Kept Their Nerve Against Tottenham

Despite the pressure on Sunday, Klopp was happy the fans and players didn’t get nervy.

Liverpool’s title hopes looked to be on the line on Sunday. Tottenham had gifted the Reds an advantage in the first half by playing a back three but Liverpool only managed a single goal and, in the second half, Spurs regrouped.

They changed formation, switched up their tactics, and began to look the better side. First Spurs pulled level. Then looked the more likely to go ahead. Liverpool and their fans were rocked back. In the end, though, both held their nerve.

“I have to say, I thought the crowd was unbelievable, really unbelievable,” Jürgen Klopp said of the role the fans played in helping to keep the team steady on Sunday. “They were not nervous, that’s good—nobody was really nervous.”

In the past, at times, the fans have definitely seemed nervous. On Sunday, though, with all the pressure of the end of the season and the title race piled on, they stayed loud and supporting the team throughout the second half.

It’s a sign that, maybe, everyone involved really does finally and fully believe—that even if there is a great deal of pressure involved in trying to snap Liverpool’s title drought, this is a side capable of overcoming that pressure.

“They knew it could happen,” Klopp added. “They were behind us and I love that. Now we don’t need a lot of time, but we need it together. Go again, recover, and then Southampton. We will fight again. That’s all I can promise.”
