Liverpool eager to keep title bid on track against Chelsea

Liverpool host Chelsea on Sunday aiming to keep their Premier League title bid firmly on track.

The Reds head into the weekend two points ahead of Manchester City, although they could find themselves behind the reigning champions by the time kick-off comes around.

City are fancied to beat Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park earlier on Sunday, but Liverpool are favourites with the bookmakers to regain top spot later that day.

Adam Lallana should be fit to return for Liverpool after recovering from a muscle injury, while Andy Robertson is available after serving a one-match European suspension in midweek.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain edged closer to a first-team comeback after playing for an hour in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Bury in midweek.

Joe Gomez is also pushing for a recall after being named as a substitute against Porto in the Champions League following four months on the sidelines.

Maurizio Sarri shuffled his pack for Chelsea’s trip to Slavia Prague in the Europa League on Thursday, but is expected to restore his big guns to the line-up at Anfield.

Eden Hazard, N’Golo Kante, David Luiz, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Gonzalo Higuain were all on the bench in the Czech Republic and they should figure on Sunday.

Emerson and Callum Hudson-Odoi were left out of the matchday squad in Prague and are also likely to be involved against Liverpool.

The home side have struggled against Chelsea in recent times, winning just two of their last 16 meetings with the Blues in all competitions.

They have failed to win their past six league games at home against Chelsea and will undoubtedly be desperate to end that run this weekend.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are riding a 15-game unbeaten streak in all competitions and haven’t lost in their last 37 Premier League games at Anfield.

With league games against Cardiff City, Huddersfield Town, Newcastle United and Wolverhampton Wanderers to come, a victory in Sunday’s match would have Liverpool fans dreaming of the title.

Chelsea are certainly capable of springing an upset, but their long trip to the Czech Republic in midweek could count against them and Liverpool are fancied to secure a narrow victory.

Predicted starting line-ups:

Liverpool: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, van Dijk, Matip, Robertson, Henderson, Wijnaldum, Keita, Mane, Salah, Firmino.

Chelsea: Kepa, Azpilicueta, Rudiger, Luiz, Emerson, Kante, Jorginho, Loftus-Cheek, Hudson-Odoi, Higuain, Hazard.
