Alisson Becker: “I’m Just Hoping That We Can See This Story Through”

The newly appointed WHO ambassador is hopeful that Liverpool can win the UCL Final on 1 June.

After an impossible comeback which will forever be etched in the memories of all who watched the second leg of Liverpool’s semi-final against Barcelona F.C. on 7 May 2019, Alisson Becker is more than hopeful that the Reds will be triumphant and lift the UEFA Champions League trophy in two weeks time.

As he told UEFA whilst discussing the incredible semi-final win, “That memory will be with me forever, it’s a story that I’ll be telling my children and my grandchildren. I’m just hoping that we can see this story through, God willing, to get the title, which is our main objective.”

Liverpool will of course take on Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday 1 June 2019 at Atletico Madrid’s Estadio Metropolitano in Madrid, Spain in the UCL final. This will be only the second ever all English final (first one was Manchester United vs Chelsea in 2008) and Spurs first ever UEFA Champions League final.

Being a part of the European nights at Anfield is a truly magnificent experience and according to Alisson it is “Incredible.” He said,

I played here against Liverpool and I experienced the power that the fans gave to the team on the pitch. They put a lot of pressure on you, it’s not easy playing here against our team. Now that I’m playing here I’ve experienced the amazing things that we have achieved in this Champions League, qualifying for the final in the way that we did, returning from a difficult defeat that many thought was impossible. It was achievable through God’s blessing, the work that we put in and a lot of dedication, plus the support from the fans on the night which was incredible.

And what has been the Golden Gloves winner’s favourite moment of the tournament thus far?

Without a doubt, the save against Napoli was pretty much the last touch of the ball and that save could be counted as a goal, I say. But of course, my teammates played their part as well and that’s what makes it so special, to be part of that group and to be able to help them. They are such incredible players.

The World Health Organization’s New Ambassador

Alisson and his wife, Dr Natalia Loewe Becker, a medical doctor and health advocate from Brazil have been named WHO goodwill ambassadors for health promotion set to ‘promote healthier lives, stronger health work forces and improved mental health globally’.

They were named alongside Cynthia Germanotta, president of Born This Way Foundation, and Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, the former president of Liberia who have respectively been named the goodwill ambassadors for mental health and health workforce.

According to WHO director general Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus who spoke at the 72nd World Health Assembly in Geneva, “Each of our new ambassadors are champions in their own right. From helping their communities rebuild and develop sustainability, to fighting for better mental health and well-being, to being role models for healthier living.”
