Bayern Put Timo Talks on Ice

Let’s drown our sorrows in some potentially exciting news.

After a sensational run of form — 10 straight wins in all competitions and a 29-7 goal difference — Liverpool and all those associated with the club were brutally brought back down to earth last night, suffering a first-leg defeat to Barcelona despite largely playing the Spanish champions even. Today, naturally, every piece of content surrounding the Reds will be in reference to that fact, and, to be honest, it’s just depressing me.

Which is why we’re going in a different, fun direction with this one! Good players are fun — as long as they’re not punching your DMs in the head and scoring sizzling free kicks against you — transfers are fun, and when you put those two together, well you got a stew cooking.

Timo Werner is not only a good player — 60 goals and 26 assists in a little under three seasons attest to that — but also ticks every single box on Jürgen Klopp’s 2019 Summer Transfer Window bingo card. At 23, the striker has yet to reach his peak as a player, his German nationality suggests a certain kinship with the Liverpool manager, and his ability to play across the frontline makes him a perfect backup to the Reds’ current holy trinity of Sadio Mané, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah.

It has long been assumed that Werner — as is often the case with German talent breaking through — would be hoovered up by perennial champions Bayern Munich now that his contract with RB Leipzig is running down with no sign of the player willing to commit to an extension. According to Kicker, however, the Bavarians have put talks on hold until the end of the season, a move that makes little sense given the interest surrounding the former Stuttgart man.

All of which is to say that now is the time for Klopp and Michael Edwards to swoop in and secure the package while the Germans are, uncharacteristically, dawdling. The €65m fee being bandied about is much higher than the €40m quoted a month ago, but given the quality of the player in question and the Werner-shaped hole currently afflicting the Reds’ squad, the 23-year old would be worth every penny.

Liverpool’s Champions League ambitions may have taken a severe hit last night, and the Premier League title could potentially slip away by even narrower margins, but the dream of Timo continues unabated.
