Robertson: “There Can’t Be a Hangover” as Liverpool Turn Attention to Newcastle

Liverpool must put their disappointments behind them and focus on the next challenge.

Getting a 3-0 defeat out of a game you played well in feels rather like an encapsulation of the 2018-19 season for Liverpool, but that season isn’t quite over and now it’s about how the team respond to Wednesday’s disappointment.

“It’s a strange one because we played well but we got beat 3-0,” said Andy Robertson, Liverpool’s standout performer on the night, trying to digest what he’d just experienced. “It’s baffling how that’s happened.

“Their second was one of the luckiest goals I’ve been involved in, just as we were getting into the game and the fans were starting to get on top of them. We had them where we wanted them. Unfortunately, we got caught.”

That’s rather how it felt watching the game as a Liverpool fan. Barcelona were up a goal having taken their one clear cut chance. Liverpool, though, had played them at least close to even—while missing their one clear cut chance.

There hadn’t felt much in it, and Liverpool were piling the pressure on Barcelona as the second half progressed. Then a break, a bounce, the ball falling kindly to the game’s greatest ever player in front of an open goal.

And if that 3-0 defeat does signal now the end of Liverpool’s European campaign, it’s a cruel way to it. But there’s still another game to play there, and still more to play for in the league—even if that, too, seems a long shot.

Liverpool have to pick themselves up and look to Newcastle now, focusing on the positives of how well they’ve played this season and even how well they played last night at the Nou Camp, and they have to get the result.

“There can’t be a hangover,” Robertson added. “Newcastle is our full concentration now. We are near the end of the season but we’ve got three, hopefully four, games left. We need to go strong into the Newcastle game.

“We need to get our bodies, first and foremost, ready and then go again because we can’t let our foot off the gas. We need the three points and push the whole way.”
