Hertha Berlin Want to Negotiate New Marko Grujic Deal

It’s no secret that the Bundesliga side want to keep the 23-year-old around beyond the current season.

The league season has one week to run in Germany and clubs there are beginning to nail down their summer transfer plans. Of particular interest to Liverpool are the plans of Hertha Berlin, who have made no secret of their desire to keep Marko Grujic around.

Though the 23-year-old Liverpool loanee has struggled at times for fitness this season, when he has been healthy he has been Hertha’s best player—and, according to their manager, the best midfielder that club has had playing for them in a long, long time.

As such, they’ve made no secret of their desire to keep him around beyond the current season. On another loan, on a permanent deal. It doesn’t matter, Hertha just want to find a way to keep Grujic, with their sporting director reiterating that point today.

Sporting director Michael Preetz has told Bild that he intends to call Liverpool to try to negotiate a new Grujic deal “after the champion fight is over,” once again making their stance on the player more than clear. The question now is what is Liverpool’s?

If Grujic has a key role to play at the club next season—if Jürgen Klopp thinks that perhaps he can push his way into the regular midfield rotation—then it’s certain that he won’t be back at Hertha next season. But, as good as he’s been when fit, that’s far from certain.

Liverpool will expect to head into next season with Fabinho, Jordan Henderson, James Milner, Gini Wijnladum, Naby Keïta, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain fighting for time at three positions in midfield, and good or not there may simply be no room for Grujic.
