Liverpool Legend Says Jürgen Klopp Doesn’t Need to Sign New Players

John Barnes believes the Liverpool squad is strong and has everything it needs to go again next season. Debatable, John.

Talk of incoming players has come up a level now, with the Premier League season over and the transfer window opening soon. Jürgen Klopp has already alluded to an unexciting summer of activity so Liverpool supporters might not want to get attached to any top-drawer players linked with the club.

Liverpool legend John Barnes is in accord with the Liverpool manager. Barnes believes the squad is strong and, with the exception of replacing a few outgoing players, shouldn’t necessarily be tampered with.

“Look at Joe Gomez and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who haven’t played this season and are coming back in to add to what we already have,” Barnes said.

”We don’t need anything but yes, if a player comes up. But I don’t think we necessarily need to sign anyone. We’ve got a good balance and good cover.

“Players may leave, but the main players are staying and so we don’t have to do anything.”

Barnes is right about the influence Oxlade-Chamberlain’s reintroduction into the team will have next season. The pre-season will be key for both he and Gomez as the two work their ways back to full power.

“It will be (like new signings),” said Barnes.

“They’ve played before and have been main players in the team. Now, of course, Naby Keita came and Fabinho came and Oxlade-Chamberlain has got a bit of a fight on his hands, but he’s a fantastic player, as is Joe Gomez at the back.

“The squad is looking very healthy. We’ve seen that even when we didn’t have Roberto Firmino and Mo Salah and we had to play with Divock Origi and Xherdan Shaqiri, we beat Barcelona 4-0.

”I think once upon a time, Liverpool needed a best XI and if we didn’t have the best XI, we struggled to compete. Now, I think the squad is looking much more healthy in terms of even if we don’t have the best players we can still win matches.”

Liverpool have learned to grind out wins and tap into their collective confidence when the chips are down or when there’s a mountain to climb. The importance of this mentality throughout the team is on a par with the benefits of Virgil Van Dijk or Alisson joining the ranks. Klopp has developed his team into a force. Now, he must refine.
