Rumour Mongering: Liverpool Track Three Lyon Stars Including Aouar

The Reds are looking at Houssem Aouar, Tanguy Ndombele, and Memphis Depay—but not Nabil Fekir.

If you’re fan of adding new names to the always growing list of players Liverpool could potentially sign, this will be good news. If you’re a fan of going back in for players the club might have signed in the past it might not be.

That’s because France’s Mercato365 claim Liverpool have been heavily scouting three Lyon players this year ahead of a possible summer move for at least one—but last summer’s almost-signing Nabil Fekir isn’t amongst them.

Top of the list for the Reds is said to be 20-year-old playmaking star Houssem Aouar, an elite midfield prospect who checks many of the same boxes Fekir would have, albeit at an earlier stage in his development and without a history of knee injuries.

Liverpool have been at least lightly linked with him previously this year, and the club tried to poach him from Lyon before he signed his first professional contract there. They may not ever sign Aouar, but there is likely genuine interest.

Liverpool were also said to be compiling dossiers on Tanguy Ndombele and Memphis Depay, the former a 22-year-old midfielder said to be on Man City’s shortlist and the latter a 25-year-old forward and former United player.

Tracking, scouting, and compiling dossiers doesn’t mean Liverpool will actually sign—or even try to sign—any of them, of course. But, if true, it’s a bit of insight into who the Reds might try to move for this summer.

It’s also a sign that, for all their interest in Fekir last year and his near-signing, the club really do appear to have moved on completely from the 25-year-old Frenchman.
