Liverpool Seeking Pre-Champions League Final Friendly Opponent

Three weeks is a long time to go between games and the Reds want to stay sharp.

With most of the major European leagues not wrapping up until this weekend and space needing to be left for domestic cup finals, Liverpool and Tottenham are both in the midst of a three week wait for their Champions League final.

It’s a less than ideal situation for keeping the players match fit and sharp, and it appears the Reds have been looking to set up a friendly for the week before the final as a result, which is easier said than done at this stage in the year.

North Holland’s Noordhollands Dagblad has reported today that Liverpool asked AZ Alkmaar if they would be willing to play a friendly after the end of the Eredivisie season but the league’s fourth-place side rejected their approach.

It is further being reported Liverpool were seeking to bring them to Spain to play the friendly ahead of the final on June 1st, where the club will undertake a mini pre-season when the players return from being given the week off.

There is no suggestion as to who else Liverpool may have approached—or may currently be talking to—but it’s hardly a surprise that finding a willing partner for a friendly after the European seasons wrap would be difficult.
