Rumour Mongering: Simon Mignolet Set to Leave Liverpool This Summer
Try not to shed too many tears.
So it’s been a journey with Liverpool and Simon Mignolet.
Arriving from Sunderland to replace a ‘keeper everyone loved, even if he hadn’t been at his best in recent seasons, Mignolet had his work cut out to make his way into supporters’ hearts. Fortunately, he arrived in a season where Liverpool played sparkling football, even if he himself was merely adequate, and things went over ok. In the next couple of years however, he was at times just flat out atrocious. The errors piled up until it became clear a replacement had to be signed.
Unfortunately, that replacement was Loris Karius. Now, Karius was not quite the disaster some have made him out to be, and did show genuine moments of promise. Unfortunately, these were too intermittent and equally came with some fairly obvious errors. That Mignolet still played plenty of games in his two years at the club is perhaps all that needs to be said on the subject.
Of course, Alisson is now at the club and looks likely to remain between the sticks for many years to come. Mignolet reportedly wasn’t over the moon about having to sit on the bench for a year, so it’s hardly a surprise that talk has arisen about his departure. Joe Bernstein of The Mail on Sunday reports that Liverpool are looking for a fee in the region of £15 million for the Belgian. It is implied, though, that Mignolet will not be leaving Anfield unless a such a fee is agreed.
This would really seem like a win for everyone at this point. Mignolet wants to play football, even if it is at a lower level than Liverpool. The club should get a solid fee for him and his number one level wages are taken off the books. And the buying club will receive someone who is in truth still a more than capable goalkeeper. Liverpool’s style of play never suited a natural shot stopper who preferred to stay on his line like Mignolet, so there’s no reason he can’t regain his Sunderland form elsewhere.
All the best, Simon.
