Gerrard hoping to reunite with former Reds teammate at Rangers

Steven Gerrard wants to reunite with former teammate Martin Skrtel at Ibrox as the Rangers boss makes a third attempt to sign the Slovakian, according to the Daily Record.

The defender is now a free agent after his contract at Fenerbahce expired and the former Reds captain wants him to sign for Rangers this summer.

Skrtel, 34, is reportedly set to make the journey to Glasgow for contract negotiations as Gerrard looks to finally land his man.

Rangers have thus far been unable to match Skrtel’s high wage demands and were deterred by Fenerbahce’s £5million price tag last year.

The deal was revisited in January but the former Liverpool centre-back was unwilling to take a significant pay cut to make the switch to Scotland.

However, a Slovakian source revealed: “There have been some new conversations and we will see in the next few days if this deal can happen.”

Gerrard would undoubtedly be delighted to have a player of Skrtel’s quality and experience at the back for Rangers, especially given that the pair spent almost a decade as teammates and still remain good friends.
