Jürgen Klopp: “This is the Best Night of My Life”

Liverpool have won their sixth European Cup. Their manager just won his first.

In Madrid, Liverpool won it six times, defeating Tottenham and lifting bringing home another Champions League trophy, but for manager Jürgen Klopp it was the first time he’d won in European competition.

He’d come close before, finishing runner-up in 2013 with Dortmund and 2018 with Liverpool in the Champions League and runner-up in the Europa League with the Reds in 2016, but tonight, in Madrid, was victory number one.

“I’m so happy for the boys, I’m so happy for all these people,” Klopp said, trying to collect his emotions and seeming to land somewhere between laughing and crying from happiness as he gestured towards the travelling Liverpool fans.

“I’m so happy for my family,” he continued. “They suffer every year when we go to another final, last game of the season, and we lose it. So they deserve it more than anybody, they’re so supportive, just like [the fans].

“And did you ever see a team like this, fighting with absolutely no fuel in the tank? Then you have a goalkeeper who makes such difficult things look easy. This is maybe the best night of my life, at lest professionally.”

“It took a while. We tried a lot. We had to build in good steps. This helps a lot. Now we can carry on.”
