Liverpool defender backed for Ballon d’Or by Brazil legend

Brazil legend Kaka has joined a host of players and pundits backing Virgil van Dijk for the Ballon d’Or.

Van Dijk helped Liverpool to a second-place finish in the Premier League and played a crucial role in their Champions League final win less than a week ago.

And Kaka, who won the coveted Ballon d’Or in 2007, believes the Dutchman can be the first defender to win the accolade in thirteen years.

“We will see what happens in the future. Would I give the Ballon d’Or to Virgil van Dijk? I had some discussions talking about it with friends and with my brother and the name we chose is really his,” Kaka said.

“He had a great season in the Premier League and won the Champions League playing in a crazy way.

“We’ll see what the judges will decide but it’s time to reward a defender.”
