Van Dijk: It’s “just the start” in Liverpool’s trophy hunt

Virgil van Dijk believes Liverpool’s Champions League win is just the beginning of a fruitful trophy-winning period for the Reds.

Jurgen Klopp’s side beat Tottenham 2-0 in Madrid on Saturday to win the European Cup for a sixth time in their history, with van Dijk marshalling the Spurs attack well throughout the game.

The Dutchman, however, brushed off suggestions that he’s already one of the best defenders in recent times.

“I don’t think I’m in that category yet, or at all at the moment,” he said. “But I’m feeling good, I had a good season, a good year. For me, it’s just the start.

“I want to keep doing what I’m doing, keep progressing, keep working hard and hopefully win a lot more trophies with Liverpool but also the national team.”

Netherlands boss Ronald Koeman reiterated his belief that Van Dijk is a shining light both for club and country.

“Virgil is doing great,” he said.

“It’s all about winning big titles and that [winning the Champions League] was for him the first step, the first big title and let’s hope in the future he will win more. For the youth in Holland he’s a big example.”
