Liverpool forced to drop Schalke friendly after league fixtures announced

Liverpool have been forced to cancel their pre-season friendly with German side Schalke after the Premier League fixture list was revealed today, according to the Evening Standard.

Jurgen Klopp’s team were pencilled in to face the Bundesliga side in a home match on August 6, just two days before their Community Shield clash with Manchester City at Wembley.

However, following confirmation of an opening day match against newly-promoted Norwich on Friday, August 9, Liverpool have had no option but to pull the plug on their final friendly of pre-season.

The Schalke match has now been pushed back to next summer instead, with Klopp eager to face his friend David Wagner, who currently manages the German club.

It’s not yet clear whether or not Liverpool will try to add another friendly match in place of the Schalke game, with fixtures against Napoli and Lyon still to go ahead.

Those matches, which will take place in Edinburgh and Geneva, follow on the back of the Reds’ pre-season tour of the USA, where they will face Borussia Dortmund, Sevilla and Sporting Lisbon.
